One of my friends has sent the following anecdote which I am sharing with you all:
josh malihabadi was a regular drinker. among his favourite friends were kunwar mohinder singh bedi who was d.m. of delhi, pandit hari chand akhtar and sagar nizami. these friends would gather at his place and there used to be a mehil almost every day. josh would never drink during the day time but would start as soon as the sun was down. (faiz would however start drinking from morning till night but never got drunk. such was his capacity. ismat chugtai has referred to it as has kushwant singh). josh daily quota was four pegs spread over three hours.

once prohibtion was imposed in delhi state. so josh and bedi would go to the neighbouring haryana state to have their fill. once cpn singh, governer of pb. and haryana at that time invited them to meet with him at sonepat. they thought that they will have a good time with the gov. but there was prohibtion in the gov.'s household at that time. now the gov. requested josh to recite his poetry. having no 'mai' in sight josh was not in a mood to oblige him. sensing his need, bedi managed to take gov.
's leave for an hour and took josh to another friend there where they had their mashroob. coming back josh entertained the gov. , his family and friends. gov. asked bedi what 'nusqa' you have used to make josh twitter. bedi's reply was that the nusqa was old but tarkeeb-e-istmal was new.

Janaab Zaidi saheb has shared the following anecdote at other site which i am sharing it with you:
Josh Saheb's wit and presence of mind is a legend in literary circles. Here are two instances and they are very abrupt, funny and deep:

i) In spite of his differences on religious view points with Maulana Maudoodi, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islaami, Josh was a good friend of him. Once Josh Saheb was entering a Hospital for a regular check-up when he met Maulana at the gate and asked him as to why he was there. Maulana replied that apparently he had stones in his Kidney so he had to be operated upon and was there to set up a date for the operation. Josh Saheb said (his actual words) "Maulana mere khyaal mein Allah Mian tumhen andar se sang-saar ker reha hai" !!!!!

ii) In a TV talk show with the legendary Zia Moheyuddin, Josh Saheb was pitted against the person who was the head of the Water Board of Karachi. Josh Saheb was asked by Zia if there were any water supply problems in the area where he lived. Josh Saheb's reply: " Bhai paani to kabhi kabhi aata hai, lekin bill ba-qaaidagi se her maah ki pehli ko aa jaata hai. Usmaan Saheb (Chief of Water Board) ka bas chalta to ye to Karbala mein Imam Hussain ko bhi paani ka bill de dethay."

How do you top these marvels of intellect and wit and humor and, above all, literary worth ????

Another anecdote sent to me by my friend,Mr.B.K.Madaan:

here goes another anecdote:

akhtar shirani of 'eh ishq hamaiN barbad na kar' fame was a very popular poet of his time. he lived in Lahore but would go to Amritsar almost every sunday to meet with his friends and fans. manto who was in his teens at that time got introduced to sherani and his drinking habits durings those sittings.

during his years with bombay talkies and filmstan manto became a hard drinker. in bombay talkies he and ashok kumar shared the same hut in the studio's compound. ashok kumar was at that time a lab. assistant drawing rs.60/= p.m. he came into films accidentally. it so happened that devika rani, wife of hamansu rai, owner of bombay talkies eloped with najam hussain, the hero of a film currenty under production. at the intervention of tagore and gandhi devika rani came back home. najam hussain was blacked balled and his film carrear finished.

now b.t. was on the outlook for a hero to be cast against devika. ashoke kumar was tried at the recommendation of his brother-in-law, s.mukherje (later one of the founder of filmstan). the pair clicked in 'achhut kanya, kangan and bandhan' films and ashok never looked back.

during filmstan period ashoke and manto both married. ashok was now an owner of a car. he would sometime take manto home. his wife would then caution him to restrict manto to one or two pegs as otherwise safia (manto's wife) would complain to her. both the women were also friends by now. ashoke would laugh it away.

manto had another good friend in shyam, the them popular hero. i don't know whether it was his real name or filmi name. he was married to mumtaz, his college days girl friend. when manto was in dire straits in pakistan shyam sent him rs.5000/- thro. a film distributer. shortly after that shyam died in an accident while shooting for the film 'shabistan'.

circumstances made manto an alcholic. in later life he would write a short story or a sketch and sell it in the evening for rs.20/- so that he could get his bottle.

My bazurg friend,Mr.B.K.Madan had sent me the following anecdote:
the established heroes of the taday's indian film industry command fabulous sums for their roles.aamir khan is reported to have signed a film for 5 crores. however in the early days of the film industry stars like prithviraj kapur, k.l.sehgal, kidar sharma, punkuj mullik, k.c.dey etc. were all paid employees of new theatres of calcutta. similarly were the stars of famous cine, bombay talkies, filmstan. dilip kumar also started as a paid employee of bombay talkies.

ashok kumar who was a lab. assistant got catapulted to be a hero against devika rani and his salary was raised from rss.60/- to rs.150/- p.m. manto who was his hut mate in the compound of b.t.studios in malad has narrated in 'ganje frishte' how asokh was worried to hide this wealth the day he got his first salary as hero. in the night he kept the currency under the four feet of his charpoy. next day manto took him to a nearby bank branch to have his account opened.

miss kajan and master nissar were the leading pair of the silent era of our films. if i remember aright kajan once appeared in public in a sari stitched all over with hundred rupees currency notes. both she and master nissar owned a rolls royce each which was considered the ultimate luxury in those days.

i don't know about kajan but master nissar died in utter poverty. at one time sahir ludhianvy helped him in getting an extra's part. bhagawan , producer/director of box office hit 'albela' in which he appeared as hero against geeta bali was cremated at public expense.

alcholism has claimed many of our well known stars prominent among those were ch
ander mohan (jehanghir of sorab modi's 'pukar'), k.l.sehgal, meena kumari.

Another one from Mr.B.K.Madan:

both pandit nehru and maulana azad , the prime minister and education minister of free india had a soft corner for josh malihabadi. to provide him with a job an urdu monthly 'ajkal' was started by the publication division, govt. of india and josh was appointed as its editor with sagar nizami and balwant singh as asstt. editors. it was a sine cure post for him. he would go to office at his liesure where his friends would gather in his room, have tea and gup shup.

josh had been the only person in the annals of govt. of india who used to draw pay from three different sources as stated by kunwar mohinder singh bedi in his autobioghraphy, 'yadoN ka jashan'. these three sources were provided to him by maulana azad when josh would go to him to increase his salary as he was always under debt and the sources were: editorship of 'aajkal'; visiting professor of urdu in the central universities of aligarh muslim univ. and (aasifia )univ. hyderabad.

josh was a reluctant migrant to pakistan. this he has clearly stated in his 'mera marsia' . marsia is said after a muslim's death but he wrote it himself in his life time. a couplet in it says 'zan-o-farzand ki vabastgi ne watan si shai ko mujh se chhoraya'. he also began to write himself as 'josh marhoom'.

'alwidah eh malihabad ke raNgeeN gulestan' is worth a read
